NikeSync
A training programme for people with periods
Because women are not just small men.
We’ve always been told that women are just small men. So we train just like them, but lift lighter, and hit lower PBs . But women have complex menstrual cycles that influence our energy levels, recovery times, cravings, sleep and loads more. Women are not just small men. So how about if we start training women according to their own physiology? Perhaps then we’ll see the performance levels that women are truly capable of.
With that in mind we created NikeSync, a training programme that lets people with periods harness the power of their menstrual cycle.
How it came about
We went to Nike with the proactive idea of changing how they talk to female athletes. Stop using the sports science of the male physiology for the other 50% of the population and start addressing the impact the menstrual cycle can have on a female’s performance. We worked closely with Stacy Sims (global expert on female physiology) to define the phases of her cycle and outline the training and nutrition her body craves at each phase. We then launched NikeSync on the Nike App. Populated with workouts that are tailored for each phase of your cycle. Just start the programme on day 1 of your period and we’ll tell you which workouts you should be doing to work in sync with your body.
Period Power
We then created educational content so she could be enlightened on the power of her period. We taught her way more than she could ever learn in school, getting deep into the science and busting the taboos she might have on that time of the month.
We launched the workout collection with Nike Athletes (Paula Radcliffe, @Doradontexplore and more) across social to show the impact that learning about your cycle and training in sync with it can have on a variety of women; from pro athletes to everyday runners.
